How to Make a Handwriting Font on iPad

Safari or Chrome plus Apple Pencil — no desktop required to draw the letters.

Open Calimakeo in Safari, draw with Apple Pencil, download the TTF, then install it from Files. The direct-drawing workflow keeps the strokes editable, so you can fix one character without rescanning a whole page.

Prepare the iPad for clean strokes

Use a current version of Safari or Chrome, keep the iPad in a comfortable orientation and make the drawing area large enough for your hand. Apple Pencil is the easiest input, but a finger or compatible stylus works too. While the pencil is down, the canvas captures the stroke instead of letting the page scroll.

  1. Turn off Low Power Mode if the canvas feels delayed.
  2. Use a matte screen protector or steady surface if your Pencil skips.
  3. Keep the same zoom and writing posture for the whole alphabet.

Step-by-step

Write naturally, then clean only accidental wobble. Calimakeo stores the original points and can smooth the path by reducing high-frequency shake while preserving the broad direction, slant and proportions of the letter. That is different from replacing your mark with a preset glyph.

  1. Visit Create Font in Safari.
  2. Name the font.
  3. Draw uppercase, lowercase, numbers and punctuation on the writing line.
  4. Use the live preview to test repeated letters and words.
  5. Redraw any character whose height or spacing looks wrong.
  6. Download the TTF to Files.
  7. Open the file and confirm install, then relaunch the target app.

Make the result feel like your handwriting

A font looks more natural when its baseline and x-height stay consistent but common letters still retain small differences. If your plan supports alternates, capture more than one version of letters such as a, e, n, o and t. Preview a paragraph—not only the alphabet—because repeated letters reveal spacing and smoothing problems quickly.

  1. Test a sentence with double letters such as coffee and little.
  2. Check numbers, punctuation and your name.
  3. Compare the preview at the size you will use in GoodNotes, Word or a design app.
  4. Keep the original stroke if smoothing makes the result too uniform.

Troubleshooting on iPad

If the page moves while you draw, make sure your pencil is contacting the canvas and that no browser toolbar gesture is starting outside it. If a downloaded TTF does not appear in an app, confirm that iPadOS installed it and fully close and reopen the app. Some apps expose only their own supported font-import flow, so the system font list is not a guarantee that every app will show it.

  1. Open Files and tap the TTF again if the install prompt was dismissed.
  2. Check the font name in Settings or the destination app’s font picker.
  3. Restart the destination app after installing.
  4. Test one short word before laying out a full page.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Files app install fonts?

On recent iPadOS versions, opening a TTF often shows an install card. If not, use a configuration profile or an app that accepts fonts.
